Italy is a favorite tourist destination, and Rome is one of the most popular cities to visit. If you’re planning a trip to Rome, it’s best to do a lot of research beforehand to make sure you’re visiting the best sites of the city. While it’s a great place to visit, it’s also easy to fall into some tourist traps. Avoid these four common mistakes that many tourists make.

Trying to see everything in a few short days
There are tons of fantastic sights to see in Rome, and it simply isn’t possible to get to all of them in a short amount of time. Plan to spend three or four days in Rome so you’re able to see everything, like the Vatican, the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Roman Forum, and the Pantheon, without getting exhausted and unable to truly appreciate the sights. It’s likely these spots will be crowded and filled with long lines, so having time to take in the sites will prevent you from feeling stressed about not being able to see everything.

Not buying tickets ahead of time
To make sure you’re able to visit all of the tourist attractions you want to see, it’s in your best interest to purchase tickets ahead of time. Without tickets, you may spend hours waiting in line. Some attractions even require you to buy timed tickets ahead of time. Make sure you to get your tickets through the official portals and not from street vendors outside of the attractions. Some travel guides will take care of this aspect for you, and may even be able to get you before-hours tours.

Only speaking English
While it’s not expected of you to master the Italian language before traveling to Rome, you should try learning a few key phrases. Phrases like good morning and good afternoon, please and thank you, and where’s the restroom? Will likely come in handy during your trip. While most people in Italy speak English and are willing to do so, the fact that you put in the effort to learn some of their language will go a long way and may help you receive better service in restaurants and cafes.

Dining at tourist trap restaurants
Rome is filled with some of the best restaurants in the world. But, you’re not going to find the best food from restaurants surrounding tourist attractions. Restaurants with big signs and English menus should be avoided. The food in these types of restaurants will be overpriced and mediocre. Research before your trip to pick out some of the best restaurants to visit and ensure you’re getting authentic Roman cuisine. Also, don’t forget to make reservations. Some restaurants require reservations to be made weeks in advance. Play it safe and make your reservations well in advance.
